New Life in Christ
God's Love
Jesus loves us with an awesome and everlasting love. He came
to die for us so we will be freed from sin and be united with Him on earth and
for all eternity. Eternal life and happiness with Him will be ours. John 3:16
states, "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that
everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal
life."
If He did not die for our sins, we will be suffering in hell forever (Mt.
5:22, 30, 18:19, Ja.3:6, Mt. 5:29, 18:9, 23:33, Mk. 9:43, Lk. 12:5) after we
leave this earth. If, at times, it is almost unbearable to suffer for a few years
on earth, how can one ever withstand to suffer for an infinite number of years
in hell?
God loves us unconditionally even if we are horrible sinners (Rom. 8:38).
St. Paul, Mary Magdalene and the prodigal son are examples. However, we can
separate ourselves from Him by sin (Rom. 6:23, John 8:34). He is always waiting
for us to repent of our sins and return to Him (Mt. 4:17). Because of His death on the cross,
every time we sin, repent and ask for His mercy, He forgives us. This reunites us with Him
and showers us with His rich blessings.
If we are in union with Him when we depart from this earth we will be with
Him in heaven forever. If not, we travel the other path of hell or purgatory (2
Macc.12:43-46, 1Cor.3:10-15). It is always wise to be aware of the consequences
of our actions. Our great love for Him, however, should be the reason for our
efforts to be in constant unity with Him.
Hence, His forgiveness and grace. Praying daily the
Miracle Prayer
- a combination of renewal of baptismal vows, sinner's prayer and
commitment - moves us to daily repentance and commitment to Him. We can confess
directly to Him (1 John 1:9), but for our mortal sins we need to confess to a
priest (Mt. 16:19). The Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 1457 states,
"Anyone who is aware of having commited a mortal sin must not receive Holy
Communion without receiving sacramental absolution(or having confessed to a
priest)". Even if we commit only venial sins, we are encouraged to have the
Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently at least once a month, according to John
Paul II. Spiritual healing occurs also.
